Humble Beginnings

Tung Shin Hospital has been a witness to the development of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian society. The growth of the hospital in many ways is likened to that of Kuala Lumpur.

Tung Shin Hospital was founded by the last Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur in 1881 while Kuala Lumpur was still a mere village. It was initially set up as a modest clinic named Pooi Shin Thong, to provide primarily free traditional Chinese medical treatments to the poor and needy. It was officiated as Tung Shin Hospital on 23 November 1895 to cater for the increasing demand of medical care services during the tin mining industry boom in Kuala Lumpur.

Tung Shin Hospital marked a great milestone with the establishment of it’s Western medical services after the Second World War.

In 1992, Tung Shin Academy of Nursing was proudly launched to develop and nurture young people who are passionate in the nursing profession.

More than a century later, Tung Shin Hospital has developed into what it is today 。

“ Becoming a leading non-profit hospital takes more than medical expertise and technology. We continue to strive to deliver exceptional care to help create a lifetime of good health for everyone in Malaysia. It stays true to our past, encompasses the present and outlines the future. ”
